Being a competitive candidate in the changing market is now more important than ever. And while the hiring process is changing (with alternative methods such as video interviewing becoming commonplace), the fundamentals of how to interview successfully and how to get the best results from your CV haven’t.

In our recent video podcast, Tracey Sharpe, Georgina Glover, Jenna Seton and Rebecca Patel shared their insights into how candidates can get ahead of the competition and present their best selves to potential employers.

To help you set yourself up for success in your job search, here are some of the key tips covered in our podcast on everything from creating a stand-out CV to acing your interview:

Preparing for a Video Interview

  • Set up your tech well ahead of time, including selecting the right equipment, testing your video and audio quality, finding out how to access the meeting, knowing where your audio and visual controls are and ensuring your internet is working well.

  • Have a ‘Plan B’ in case of technical issues, which might mean sharing your mobile number and email address with the interviewer beforehand, downloading the video app onto your phone and keeping your device handy as a backup.

  • Ensure you have a professional background that is tidy and well-lit, and that the camera frames you from the shoulders up.

  • Minimise distractions by silencing devices, asking others in the house to stay quiet and muting your audio when possible.

Improving Your Interview Technique

  • Make sure you’re familiar with the information on your CV and have a printed copy handy in case you need to refer to it, as well as a notepad and pen to jot down questions.

  • Come up with some examples you can use to answer interview questions, and remember to have a situation, be specific, think about your actions and explain the result.

  • Do your research on the company that’s interviewing you and brainstorm beforehand to refresh yourself on what your long-term personal and career goals are.

  • Keep in mind that it’s ok to reflect and pause before answering, especially if it’s a more complex or situational question where you have to share an example.

  • Be prepared for small talk to set the tone, and think about how you can show your personality and positivity. Have some questions prepared if prompted to ask.

Making Your CV More Competitive

  • Make sure your CV is relevant and tailored to the role you have applied for before you send it and includes key areas such as your systems and education.

  • Bring your responsibilities to life with action words and examples.

  • Include a cover letter that shows your interest in the role, commitment and relevant achievements.

  • It’s important to think about how you can demonstrate what employers or agencies are looking for, as well as any transferrable skills or achievements that will make you stand out.

  • Once you’ve submitted your application, be prepared to answer any follow-up questions around your interest in the role, why you are looking, your availability, location, salary range and hours.
